
- What to see in York
- York Minster. This is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. Beautiful interior.
- York's centre is enclosed by the city’s medieval walls. The walls are open to walk upon during daylight hours.
- Clifford’s Tower, a quatrefoil Keep built on top of a Norman motte.
- The Shambles, a narrow medieval street, lined with tea rooms, restaurants and shops. It is the best preserved medieval street in Europe.
- Merchant Adventurer’s Hall is one of the best preserved medieval guild halls in the world.
- Barley Hall is a medieval timber frame hall in the centre of York.
- Another feature of central York is the narrow side streets, many of which lead towards the former main market-place.
- York is rich in mediaeval architecture so it’s well worth spending a bit of time walking around the city soaking up the ambiance.
- Remains of St. Mary's Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey founded in 1055 and dedicated to Saint Olave destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII,
